This custom residence has something for everyone and was recently selected for the  2009 Cool House Tour . Kathie and Dick Hanson, a recently retired couple found a fantastic lot off of Hamilton Pool Road to build their dream home. A major goal of the residence was to be as environmentally friendly and energy efficient as possible.  It has always been my opinion, that if I can make a 10% impact on a larger home it could have a bigger environmental 'saving' than a smaller home.

The clients considered an ICF, Rastra, but moved away from that to a conventional 2x6 framed house, with as many other energy efficient features as possible. The clients wanted to obtain a five-star rating through the City of Austin's Green Building Program. The home design centers around a great cluster of live oak trees to encourage a more comfortable outdoor living space. Features that the Hanson's wanted incorporated in the residence include; an art studio for Kathie, and a workshop/radio room for Richard. The Hanson's moved for Georgia and wanted the home's design to be different from what is typically done in Austin.

Although I had a very good idea of the first floor, I prepared two options for the second floor. Ultimately the clients really liked the first floor, but wanted to make some changes to the second floor, which included utilizing the entire space over the garages for living space and for storage.   In addition, the final design included attaching the workshop and other garages to the main house.
